Tokyo Olympics was targeted 2.5 times more than 2012 London Olympics – ET CISO
According to the NTT officials, not one of the attacks were successful and all of them stood thwarted. Key infrastructure elements provided by the company includedmonitoring and analysis, security operations center (SOC) services, and an end-to-end security solutions package. Led by a team of more than 200 cybersecurity specialists, NTT ensured stable operation of the Tokyo Games and no disruption of the operations in any way.
“NTT provided the most innovative Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, with a variety of new spectator experiences through NTT R&D as well as 5G,” states, SVP of Security & Trust Office, CISO, NTT Corporation in official communication.
During the Tokyo Games, unauthorized communications, which targetedin terminals were observed; however, NTT blocked all such communications promptly. However, the company does admit of the additional and unexpected challenges that were borne out of the pandemic situation such as the Games getting postponed by a year and concomitant changes in the threat landscape like fake and phishing websites and additional responsibilities such as protecting the medical systems. Moreover, due to Covid-19, many games were conducted without any spectators, turning telecommunication services into the most important part of the Games. Any disruption would have had grave consequences.
According to the official, the uninterrupted conduct of the Tokyo Games is a real success story from a cybersecurity perspective and there were key factors responsible for the august security posture, which included having the kind of defense, the right people in place, being on the offensive when needed and intelligence-driven defense system.
NTT attributes the successful conduct to four factors:
- Threat intelligence and monitoring: Analysis of past cyber attacks on largescale international events (such as operational information stealing, attacks, APT attacks) strengthened crisis management by bolstering monitoring and collection of threat information from Tokyo Games network system as well as general external information.
- Total Security Solutions: Maintaining a “Cyber Hygiene” environment through the adoption of a whitelist (laying down possible communication protocols) format.
- Talent, Mind, and Formation: Training programs and repeated simulated attacks helped team members to understand the complexity of the project and increase awareness of preventive maintenance.
- Team 2020 stakeholders management: Collaboration with public bodies like critical infrastructure and ICT service providers, International Olympic Committee, and Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, ensured that timely and close information coordination was carried out.
